Carried Forward

The Stories We Keep in Small Spaces

Some houses shelter memories. Others help carry them forward.

At first glance, this is a book about miniature houses.

It isn't. It is about memory, craftsmanship, belonging, and the quiet ways ordinary objects become part of extraordinary lives.

Through seven remarkable homes, Carried Forward explores the stories people leave behind—and the unexpected ways those stories continue long after we think they're finished.

Reflections on memory and belonging

Why I Wrote Carried Forward

I never intended to write a book.

I simply wanted to restore old dollhouses.

But with every restoration came another story. Some belonged to the people who built the houses. Others belonged to the families who loved them. Still others unfolded as the houses found new caretakers.

What began as a creative project slowly became something much more meaningful. I thought I was saving old houses. Instead, they changed the way I saw them.

They taught me that every carefully repaired staircase, every faded wallpaper, and every tiny imperfection was part of someone's story.

Before long, I realized the restorations were only part of the journey.

Carried Forward is my attempt to preserve not only the houses themselves, but the memories, craftsmanship, and human connections they represent. My hope is that when you turn the final page, you'll see these miniature homes not as collectibles, but as small places where very real stories continue to live.

The stories in these pages began long before this book. My hope is that they'll stay with you long after you've turned the last one.
