Learning to Light a Dollhouse
My first experience wiring a dollhouse involved speaker wire. I was building a house for my granddaughter and couldn't find dollhouse-gauge wire. I did, however, find some wire that looked about the right size. It was speaker wire. So, I Googled whether speaker wire could be used as electrical wire. Apparently, it could.

It was still thicker than I wanted, but it worked. I was using flat LED strip lights in the house, which meant every connection had to be soldered. I didn't really understand dollhouse electrical systems at that point. I didn't know anything about tape wire or brads. I just knew I wanted the lights to work.
Fortunately, I wasn't figuring it out entirely on my own. My brother-in-law, a friend, and my husband all helped along the way. I learned how to solder, how to make the connections, and eventually how to get electricity where I needed it to go. And the house came out really well. So when I built two more houses, also for little girls, I used the same process. It wasn't necessarily the conventional way to wire a dollhouse, but I knew it worked.
Later, the Houseworks Victorian introduced me to a different kind of electrical problem. It was an older house from the 1980s that had already been fully wired—not with tape wire, but with traditional wire. Decades later, some of that wiring was old, torn, or frayed beyond repair. Instead of installing a system from scratch, I had to trace what was there and run new wire where the old wiring could no longer be saved.
By the time the Lawbre came along, then, I wasn't new to dollhouse electrical. But I had never wired an entire house with tape wire. The Lawbre started as a completely blank shell, which meant I could plan the electrical system from the beginning. I drew out the paths first, figuring out where I wanted lights and how I could get power to each room.
I thought that part would feel tedious. It was actually kind of fun. There's something very satisfying about looking at an empty house and planning where all those invisible lines need to travel. Once I had the routes figured out, installing the tape wire went surprisingly quickly, and using mitered corners to make the turns was much easier than I expected.
Then I installed the junction box and got my first live test. I'm not going to pretend it was some great dramatic moment. But it was a low-key rush. There is something ridiculously exciting about sending electricity through a dollhouse and realizing that the system you just planned actually works.
And then came the brads. Oh, the brads.

Every light had to connect to the tape wire, and those tiny little brads were, without question, my least favorite part of the entire process. The brad-placement tool and I were not friends. The little pointed tool Cir-Kit provided for making the pilot holes didn't hold up particularly well either. I went through two tips on this one house.
Installing a light became an event. I made the pilot holes, stripped the wire tips, twisted the wire ends together, fed them into the holes, and then tried to hold onto a microscopic brad long enough to get it into the same hole with the wire.
I dropped the brad......I lost the brad. Occasionally, I hit one before it was seated far enough and sent it zinging across the room. Then I found another brad and started again. Eventually, I hammered the freaking thing into the tape wire and hoped I hadn't disturbed something else in the process.

I hate the brads. There is no redemption arc for the brads. But then I turned the power on, and the light worked. That part was incredibly satisfying.
What I hadn't expected was how much tape wire would change the way I built the house.
Normally, I worked through a house element by element. I did the ceilings, then paint and wallpaper, then installed the floors. When I used battery-operated lighting, those things could happen fairly independently. With the Lawbre, I deliberately worked room by room instead.
Before I closed anything up, I wanted to know the electrical in that room worked. So, I tested it. I installed the ceiling and finishes, then tested it again. I installed the light—and survived the brads—and tested it one more time before moving on. I probably tested the electrical far more often than necessary, but after everything it took to get those lights connected, I wasn't taking any chances. The interesting result was that the house looked a little strange while I was working on it. One room might be nearly finished while the room beside it still had exposed tape wire and unfinished floors.

But I started to really like working that way. Instead of watching the entire house progress at roughly the same pace, I got these small moments when one room suddenly became complete. And because I was thinking about the electrical before I finished each space, I became much more aware of all the work that would eventually disappear behind the walls and ceilings.
Looking back, there's something funny about the progression. I started with speaker wire because it was what I could find. I learned to solder because that was what those first houses required. The Houseworks taught me how to deal with wiring that had survived for decades—and what to do when it hadn't. Then the Lawbre introduced me to an entirely different system.
I wouldn't necessarily recommend speaker wire as anyone's introduction to miniature electrical work, but I also wouldn't change the way I learned. Each house gave me a different problem to solve, and each one left me knowing a little more than I did when I started. The Lawbre was the first time I could look at a complete tape-wire system and know that I had planned it and installed it myself.
The brads and I never did become friends.
